July Activities/Pictures

July was a fairly quiet month.  I went to the grocery store, bank and drive up communion.  I also had a couple of medical appointments and we got takeout occasionally, but other than that, we've stayed home.

David's birthday was the 18th and Janice, Devin and Kyleigh came over with takeout from Famous Dave's, a favorite local barbecue place as a surprise for him.  Kyleigh received a perler bead kit from her mom for her birthday in March so she could make it for grandpa for his birthday.  BTW, he loved it.

Earlier in the month, Kyleigh attended a virtual Girl Scout Camp.  The theme was arts and crafts and they gave her a box with all the materials needed.  They made crafts, sang songs and did other fun activities and Kyleigh had a really fun time.  These are the crafts she made.  The item on the top left is a bandana and the one on the right is a t-shirt bag for carrying her sleeping bag.

and a vision board.  Instead of doing it on paper, Janice had her do it on the computer.  She's going to Disney World in May with her dad's family and that's the subject of the board.

Taz sometimes sits beside me while I stitch and usually sits on my scissors or something I need.  One night, he decided to move over to my lap.  (He likes to be close to people.)

Finally, Kyleigh had her Pom banquet last week and Janice sent me a picture of her receiving an award for "Best Performance" for the way she is always smiling during the performances now and goes full out.  She'd expected to win the one for "Most Improved" though.  She starts POM camp next week and there's a chance she may be the team captain this year.

January Happenings

Every month I find pictures that pretty much stand-a-lone and don't warrant a blog post of their own, so I'll try to combine them into one post at the end of each month.

This is what I look at every evening while watching TV.  He loves his "daddy".

I've never had a caricature done of me, but last night at the Fellowship Club Potluck, I had a chance to get one done for free.   The "real" me is in my profile picture.

Kyleigh is now a Cadette Girl Scout and if you're a Girl Scout, this time of year is Girl Scout Cookie time.  Kyleigh has been selling since the 26th. She has sold over 100 boxes so far and booth sales haven't even started yet.  I took her to the Ronald McDonald House on Monday and David and I took her to one of our favorite restaurants today. Over the weekend, she sold seven boxes to her aunt, Amber.

BTW, she no longer has to wear her glasses except for reading or when she needs to focus and I just realized that she's as tall as her aunt.

Cookie University

Since Janice is the Nursery Coordinator at our church and needed to be in the nursery, I got to take Kyleigh to the Cookie Kickoff - Cookie University event for Cadette and Senior Girl Scouts.   There she got tips from the two top sellers from last year and learned about making SMART goals, budgeting and saving and investing.

After the lessons, there was an ABC News interview and picture and then the girls were able to participate in a photo booth session.  Kyleigh was by herself, but soon found three friends who sat together during the lessons and then participated in the photo booth session together.

And, here's the patch that goes on the back of her vest.  She wanted to hold onto it herself and I wanted to hold onto it for her, because I was afraid she'd lose it.  Guess what?  She did drop it somewhere, but was able to get another one.

We were in a hurry to get her back to the church for Elevate (the middle school youth group) so we skipped the cookie tasting, but she did spot a wheel to spin and won 50% a whale watching adventure.

Girl Scout Bronze Award

First, I want to apologize for not posting in almost a month.  First of all, I hardly stitched anything during the month of August and had no additional finishes.  I also went into another funk which kept me from doing much of anything.  I'm better now and stitching again so there will be some posting going on.

Now, onto the reason for this post.  My granddaughter just completed her last year of Junior Girl Scouts and my daughter is the leader.

The highest award a Junior can earn is the Bronze Award which is earned as a troop and is meant to meet a need of some kind.  The girls decided to create quiet books out of felt and give them to the church so that they could be used by the younger children who didn't want to go into the nursery. 

On Sunday, they presented six of the books to the church and the church posted the following pictures on the church Facebook site.

 

The Facebook post included the following:

"Thank you to Girl Scout troop 4082 for presenting to the children's ministry handmade Quiet Books the girls made. The books will be stored in the nursery on a book tree. Young children can borrow the books and use them while sitting in church with their families. This project earned the girls the Bronze Award, which is the highest award that a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Congratulations girls and thanks for the gift!"

The books were put in canvas bags and can be checked out in the nursery.

After the presentation, the girls met to have refreshments and receive their bronze awards in front of their families and a few friends.

 

 

Kyleigh's cousins were visiting from Oregon and were able to attend the presentation with Kyleigh's dad and other grandparents before heading home.

And finally, just because this is probably the last time she'll wear her vest, here's a look at the back.  You can sort of see the front in the picture above.  She's been a busy girl and had a lot of fun the past two years as a Junior and will be continuing as a Cadette this year.

Receiving the My Promise, My Faith pin

Janice and her friend, Amorita are co-leaders of two different Girl Scout Troops, one of second grade Brownies and one of fifth grade Juniors.  Last month, the two troops participated in an activity, both individually at a troop meeting and as a group at a Service Unit Meeting.  This earned them the My Promise, My Faith pin to wear on their uniforms.  To make it extra special, the pins were awarded by the pastors during the mid-morning church service on November 11th.
